Equine therapist Linda Kohanov tells of an extraordinary spiritual awakening she experienced with her black mare, Rasa. This incident led her to investigate both the metaphysical and the scientific aspects of the human-horse bond. Her findings — especially regarding how the equine mind compares with the human mind, and what horses can teach humanity — are surprising. Using neurological research, cultural history, mythology, and firsthand anecdotes from years of teaching and facilitating equine therapy, Kohanov does justice to the profound communion that people — women in particular — often experience with horses. | | | |

The Tao of Equus Jul 25, 2010 It's humbling to be able to learn anew. How we relate to ourself...how we may hide from ourself...but others know us.
A Healing Read Apr 10, 2010 I am not a horsewoman and will never be one, but I relate to this book in many ways. "The Tao of Equus" is primarily about healing through the medium of rider/horse relationships, and it could be thought that the same effects are equally achieved with dogs, cats, or in fact, any domestic pet. However, Linda Kohanov explains why horses are not to be seen simply as pets, and why they are very different as non-predatory animals.
As occupational therapist, I conducted "pet therapy" sessions where an owner of a golden labrador visited with my elderly patients in continuing care. I wish I'd had "The Tao of Equus" back then, as it would have helped enrich these experiences for my patients and myself. All the same, Linda Kohanov has something different again to share about the special nature of horses. She explains this in the chapter, "Wisdom of the Prey" through a detailed description of her psychotherapeutic sessions with a client named "Joy." This chapter covers, with great wisdom and insight, the way that many women relinquish their autonomy and power, and how they can reclaim these natural attributes. Analogies from the psychology of the horse illustrate these concepts, and the story of Joy gives it all great clarity.
Perhaps the most unexpected part of the book is where Linda Kohanov shares her journey of personal transformation by going back to her Ukranian roots, almost in a "stream-of-consciousness" style. This differs from the more straightforward, narrative style of the rest of the book, and can feel somewhat like a detour from the main theme, but if you skip this section the first time round, it is well worth including in a second reading.
This is not a book that can be read in any depth in one sitting, and so I anticipate that "The Tao of Equus" will become one of the books I read again and again, every time finding new insights, professionally and personally.

I'd like to get my money refunded for this book Jan 25, 2010 I was more interested in methods to work with my horse than this gushy narrative: I thought we had left behind the '70s but this book brought back all the touchy-feely gobbledy-gook ... I'm a Californian and have an inclusive tolerance for all kinds of methods and thinking, but I quickly tired of the book and felt it lacked value.
